The late landing is where airport transfers earn their keep. A flight that touches down at 2am, a phone on ten percent, and a crowd of people offering lifts is not the moment to start negotiating. A booked airport transfer Nairobi travellers can rely on takes ten minutes to sort before you fly, and it's about the cheapest peace of mind you can buy on a trip.

Why book ahead

Three things go away when a driver is waiting for you: the haggling, the guessing and the wait. You know the price. The driver knows your flight. And you aren't deciding who to trust while you're tired.

Nairobi traffic is the other reason. It can swing from clear to crawling within an hour, so the person meeting you needs to be watching the clock too. Arrivals at odd hours are where most pickups go wrong, so those are the ones to book first.

Two airports, not one

Jomo Kenyatta International (JKIA) is where most international flights land. Wilson Airport is a separate airport across town, and many domestic flights and safari flights use it. If your trip includes a small plane to the Mara or the coast, check which airport you leave from. Moving between the two takes real time and needs its own transfer, so don't squeeze a tight connection between them.

What to ask before you book

A short list saves most of the trouble.

  1. Will the driver follow my flight if it lands late?
  2. Where will they be standing, and what name is on the sign?
  3. Is the price fixed? Is waiting time or parking extra?
  4. What vehicle is it, and will all our bags fit?
  5. Can you add a child seat?
  6. If I can't find the driver, who do I call?

If the agency can't answer the last one, that tells you plenty.

Leaving Nairobi

Departure transfers get less attention, and they cause more missed flights than arrivals do. Allow more time than the map says. Traffic, a bag check, a long queue at the airline desk: any one of them eats the gap. Check how early your airline wants you at the airport, then add a cushion on top.

Groups and business travellers

A group landing on three different flights needs a plan, not three taxis. Send the flight details early and ask for one coordinated pickup, or a few vehicles timed to the arrivals. For business trips, ask for a transfer on the company account so staff aren't paying cash at midnight. Our group flight booking Kenya page and corporate travel management page cover the flights side.

Questions people ask about airport transfers

How far is JKIA from the city centre?

Roughly 15 kilometres. How long that takes depends on the hour, so don't trust the distance. Ask what time you'll land and plan around that.

My flight is delayed. Will the driver still be there?

That's exactly why you ask whether they track flights. A good transfer service watches the arrival time and adjusts. A casual lift from a friend of a friend might not.

Do I need to book the return trip too?

Yes, and book it at the same time. It's easier to agree both now than to find a driver on the morning you leave.

Is a taxi at the airport safe?

Many travellers use them without trouble, but you're choosing in a hurry. If you do, agree the price before you get in and keep your bags in sight. A pre-booked transfer removes the decision.

Can Spice Travel arrange my transfer?
